Coinmaking and Medallic Art

Thicker hot-struck "dump" coins have a substantial weight and feel to them.

.999 Fine silver coins have intrinsic value, and you can't beat that distinctive "ring" when you pour them out onto a tavern table.

Handstruck .999 fine gold

For the ultimate in a custom coinmaking project, your coins can be struck in .999 Fine Gold. Average weight is approximately 1/8 to 1/4 Troy Ounce. Due to flucuation of the metal market, orders for gold coins must be pre paid. Inquiries welcome.

Hand-hammered coinage is a perfect way to commemorate a special event. Very popular with Living History and Renn Faire groups, a custom period-styled coin is always the ideal method to give your group that extra presence.

Standard Sizes

The standard medieval-style hand hammered coin is approximately 20 mm in diameter, and thickness varies on the type of metal and desired strike used. Custom coins in smaller diameters are availiable on special order, however larger sizes can be substantially more difficult to produce using traditional methods, and are not recommended.

Silver Coins

A typical silver coin is about 0.6 - 0.8 mm thick, and generally weighs about 2 - 3 grams. Curiously, although this is still a relatively thin coin, it is actually somewhat heavier and thicker than an authentic medieval english silver penny. Pennies in period were minted from a lower grade of silver and required a thin planchet in order to strike effectively. We use only .999 fine silver in all of our silver coinage.

Brass Coins

Brass coins are cold struck on planchets between 0.9 and 1.3 mm thick, which corresponds more closely to the thickness of a modern penny. These will give a golden look to your custom project.

Generally availiable in a higher zinc content for that golden look, or with a lower zinc content for a more coppery look.

Thicker, Heavier Coins

Thicker "dump" style ( 2 -3 mm thick) planchets must be hot-struck, and because of this are only available in fine silver, antique bronze/brass, and gold. This method is a bit more labor intensive than a cold struck coin, but yields a thicker coin with noticeable heft and weight.

Gold Coins

For a very special coin, we can strike from .999 fine gold. There is no minimum order on gold coins, but advance payment is required. Gold is sold at current market price (spot plus dealer's premium) by actual weight, plus the standardized strike fee.

   Custom Dies

No special coining project is complete without your own custom die. Although every coin requires two dies, a basic medieval-style custom die is suprisingly inexpensive. To save even more money, you can always use one of our standard long-cross dies for the reverse side at no extra cost.

Your custom dies are archived in our die library, where they are maintained for your future coin orders.
